Collection: Emma Stewart

Emma is an artist living and working in Belfast, who is currently studying for an MFA at Belfast School of Art.  She has been developing her practice through the medium of paint and lens. Her artwork critically examines the historical, biblical and contemporary depiction of the female form within the Western Art Sphere.

In recent months her work has adopted a confrontational nature, in order to emphasise the objectifying relationship between the female body and the artistic representations of it.  Emma aims to challenge this by removing the representation of the female form entirely, featuring instead the feminine presence through inanimate objects and materiality, without directly representing the female form, thus refusing to engage with the voyeuristic narrative of the male gaze.
